Probiotic drinks have spiked in interest lately all around the globe. We hear these broad claims like they contain enzymes, minerals and amino acids that help build a pulp complexion. Or that they establish a healthy glow and give us a youthful appearance. But, can we trust any of this? What is the deal with Probiotics and are they really a skin gold mine? In recent years we have seen a spike in more fermented beverages such as Kombucha, a fermented tea, Kefir, fermented milk, and Kvass, Russian fermented wheat. Many people have claimed these products have transformed their skin from just regularly drinking them. But, what exactly is in fermented beverages and what makes them good for your health?
Before refrigeration, cultures would preserve their vegetables and dairy through ‘lacto-fermentation’- which actually increases the nutritional content of the product dramatically. Fermentation has been around for thousands of years and it is a very simple process. It involves soaking vegetables in water or a salty liquid in order to grow healthy bacteria. Before you sound off the alarm these healthy bacterias help break down the sugars in the veggies to make lactic acid. Explaining why fermented foods tend to be so tart. The lactic acid raises the ph of the solution making it difficult for the bad bacteria to survive increasing the longevity of fermented food. Since the recent spike in fermented beverages, popularity researchers are beginning to study the health benefits of digesting theses gut positive bacterias. But how does digesting theses bacterias help your skin?



Turns out that your gut is home to more than half of your immune cells. Immune cells help trigger your bodies ability to fight off unwanted pathogens. These healthy bacterias help aid immune cells growth and longevity. Studies have shown having weak immune cells can lead to pretty bad skin! This is because your skin is your largest organ and many pathogens enter your body through your skin. Weak immune cells lead to a weak immune system which leads to bad skin which is no bueno.

It is no secret that skin appearance and a well-balanced diet are closely related. Studies show that by digesting fermented beverages it can help reduce inflammation on your skin and lead to a healthier glow. The probiotics found in fermented beverages have also been shown to improve your metabolism and increase your body’s absorption of antioxidants. Antioxidants help reduce free radicals in the body and help lead to a younger looking complexion.

Even if you aren’t really into fads fermented beverages might be a good fad to digest.  So next time you think about reaching for a bottle of soda (which is literally poison for your health and skin) maybe grab a fermented beverage instead. Who knows you might even enjoy the taste!

Kombucha: It is made from

black tea and sugar, fermented with yeast. Kombucha contains high levels of

enzymes, b-vitamins, probiotics, and acetic and lactic acids.

Kefir:  yogurt’s close relative and probably the most popular homemade milk-based fermented drink. It’s a natural source of probiotics + it is believed to support the immune system

Kvass: is commonly made in Russia from fermented slices of rye bread. In addition to its impressive probiotic content, kvass is considered a tonic for digestion and an excellent thirst quencher
